AKA Performance at the 2010 Sprite Step-Off

What is up with you people why does it have to be they took this and they took that or that is ours and you took it away from us. WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE ABOUT DAMN COLOR, WHAT DID MARTIN LUTHER KING JR AND J.F. KENNEDY DIE FOR (NOTHING) !!!!!!!!!! They did what they did for us to being us together and to be as one not to call each other names, GROW UP PPL. All the teams were good but the winners won because they had it going on, maybe next time the other teams will get their act together and bring it on next year. Stop pointing fingers and calling name and do what you need to do. It’s not about how good you look or how pretty you are, it’s all about the step. It is supposed to be fun for all. Stop bitching and start doing. You got beat and that is all there is to it.
Y’all gotta be fair and call it right. Them Z Taus brought it! and it wasn’t ’bout the white! From how I saw it , they didn’t miss a beat, the sistahs were just tired, face it, their game was weak! All is not lost, with that big “A” check, just buy some new moves and maybe some fresh gear, and some polish for your acts. We can learn from anyone, no matter their race, and what you all have learned is, you girls got played. It is the ZTaus who should be upset to have to share the light because there was no contest. Big ups to the ZT!s
I think the AKA’s brought their A game. I think ZTU bought their A game. The AKA’s appeared to have more traditional stepping and their technical game was tighter than ZTU. ZTU had non-stop energy and they had a bit more originality in their performance. It is a tough call but I think ZTU deserved to win. But I am NOT mad that AKA got share the spotlight. Them girls worked hellaciously hard.
And yes…they were fine as ALL get out.
Them white girls handled ya’ll. That’s the same stuff we’ve seen year after year they brought the fresh stuff and ya’ll didn’t have your A-Game this time. To bad Sprite punk out and gave both of your top honors.
THe problem is, we have seen some of the same routines over and over again. ZTA brought a new fresh approach. It was non stop energy! Congratulations to them!
racism racism racism, it wont ever go away. but you know what i get it. i would react the same way if i was black. but im not, so it kind of disgusts me. but hey we are all only human. i think that ZTA did the best but i know nothing about stepping. AT ALL. but if you were to judge it on overall crowd response, which is all i could do, then ZTA won all the way. maybe it was surprising to see white girls do what they did, which garnered the decibal level to be about double what any of the other groups had, maybe they actually were the best. but i will say that the aka move with the legs up that so many are refering to wasnt creative or original at all, it was taken from the winners of last year americas best dance crew. which might have been taken from somewhere else, im not sure, but it wasnt original or creative at all. and it looked lame to me anyway. but anyway cheers to all the blacks who are owed something, hahahaha
SWEE WEE, MY SORORS! You all are indeed the ultimate winners by far. ZTA gave the audience something unexpected, but the audience expected the AKA’s to do what they do and they did it best!
I have seen many step shows in New Orleans and Atlanta. I think the ZTA were ok. I think they basically took what black greeks have been doing for years. They took our style just like Vanilla Ice took the APhiA song and made millions. I hate to say this but they want everything we have. They will never be as good as our sororities and fraternities because this style is not within in them. We must continue to own what is ours. They will continue to when if there are white sponsors. There is no way in hell they should have walked away with 100k, especially of something we have perfected for decades.
Look, it is what it is. ZTA showed up to compete. AKA, I know you are champions but you’ve got to get back what was lost. This Step is over now accept it, forget it and next year win it!
wooooooooow!!!! the ZTA’s had non-stop energy, but as for a step “competition,” which, im guessing, encourages originality, creativity, precision, levels of difficulty, and energy, the ZTA’s came with 2 of the 5. in my book and everyone else’s book that can divide 2 into 5, that does NOT declare them winners by ANY margin. Hand’s down, Tau chapter of ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA should have been the sole winners of this competion. agreeably, had the AKA’s, Delta’s, Zeta’s (looked like their old show’s) or SGRho’s done the same show as the ZTA’s, they would’ve been booed for that old, unimaginative step routine. the ZTA’s got reaction from the crowd not b/c they were so good, but b/c the BLACK audience didnt expect that level of energy from those white girls. im not being racist, im being serious. bottom line…AKA won that stepshow. I have to give it to the ZTAs for standing up and competing, but thier routine was not elite. I do congradulate ALL for making it that far and that is from the heart. However, I have seen quite a few step shows and in each one sorrorities show some of self as they step. The ZTA seem to have pulled some of the old school moves and mixed them some and that is about it. The AKA were far more precise and brought a flava of themselves to the routine. I give it to them hands down. However the ZTA have earned a chance to compete again in my eyes.
Whoops there it is …….AKA…………,On Top,……..A winner………. in my book.

I think the AKA’s were the best. Good Job to all the sororities for competing in the Sprite stepoff.
I do not normally comment but I feel enough is enough. I have read a lot of comments degrading Divine Nine Greeks and nothing but praise for ZTA. I have not read where anyone has genuinely congratulated ALL of the teams for making it to the national competition. I no longer step but I applaud all the groups that made it. From what I have seen (and I have seen a lot) step shows in the last few years have been more about dancing and entertainment. So why are people saying that the other groups should have focused on stepping the entire time? As a community that is what WE have allowed step shows to become. Now ZTA comes along and then we say that is what a step show should be. As a race we can be so hypocritical and demeaning to our own. I hear people saying all kinds of derogatory things but not many are saying positive things. I think a lot of our people are enamored with the fact that ZTA are caucasian. I have a feeling that the other groups could have lit themselves on fire and it still would not have been enough.
My 1st Fam Sorors, y’all EARNED your money & FIRST PLACE @ 03:42. Hands down! NO question!
PhiSkee Love!
AKA the winner by a knockout. ZTA was a nolvety, this wasn’t a dance recital it was a step competition. I most definitely agree with Harvey assesment. the AKA’s are serious dimes.
I watched all of the performances. As much as you are intially tempted to buy into the C-O-N-spiracy theory – you have to give credit where it’s due. The AKA’s and Deltas represented, did their thing – but ZTA did their show NON-STOP. The transitions showed diversity/creativity, and they didn’t use any music until they did their stroll off the stage. I find it very interesting that everyone keeps referring to ZTA as “the white girls” when the AKA’s/Delta spent a great deal of their shows flipping their hair like “white girls” – it was very distracting. The step with the leg on the back was hot – I have to give the AKAs that. However, if you look at the precision, creativity, transitions, diversity of steps – ZTA rightfully won. I believe the announcer said it best “if you can step – you can step.” Close your mouths and step your game up.

Now, those white girls did bring it. But these AKA’s did a much better job. The level of difficulty was off the chain. Everyone is saying that white girls smoked everyone. People are just saying that because they are white. Now, if the deltas or the zetas did the exact same show as those white chicks, it would have been a different story. I do give props to the white chicks but the AKA’s brought it harder…….Skee Wee my sorors…..DedAKAted, Louisiana Tech University – Theta Lambda Fall 01 V.I.S.I.O.N. 12
I must say the ZTA’s hit it like the Old School, sistas and bros should not hate; the white girls brought the non stop energy to the show. It proves if you let your game down anyone with practice can take it . Obvious they did their homework, and probably were taught by a HBCU greek letter person probably a brother from PHI BETA SIGMA. Back in the days pre/post 80′s we were the only group that did handclapping stomping to that extent with NO Music, Sound effects . Props to Zeta Tau
Next year, AKAS/ DSTcome back with a vengence I totally agree with Old School AKA.
Just goes to show you what can happen when we take something that was originally ours for granted. Personally, the sorors of Zeta Tau Alpha did an outstanding job! As a saying I once saw on a t-shirt said, “Right now, some where someone is practicing and when they meet you, they’re going to beat you!” When white folks beat us at our game, it’s time to take stepping to another level. Don’t settle for the status quo! Create some new steps. As an old school fraternity brother from a HBCU I’ve seen how stepping has evolved over the last 39 years, I challenge our Divine 9 sisters and brothers to take it another level. If not, the same thing will happen again and you won’t have anyone to blame but yourself. Reclaim the game!
The rightful winners have been announced.
Sprite Step Off just posted this on their FB via Twitter:
The Sprite Step Off was initially created as a way to recognize talented college students and give out scholarships to help support their higher education. If we put on some entertaining step shows and brought people together along the way, all the better.
After the National Finals Competition this past weekend in Atlanta wrapped, we got together to do our post-competition review and found a scoring discrepancy in the sorority results. After looking at it and looking at it AGAIN, we determined there isn’t a definitive resolution.
Sprite is all about preserving the honesty and integrity of this competition. Because the scoring discrepancy can’t be resolved and due to the really tight margin between the first and second place sorors, we feel that the only right thing to do is to name both Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Tau Chapter & Zeta Tau Alpha, Epsilon Chapter, co-first place winners of the Sprite Step Off.
With these revised results, we’re gonna increase Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Tau Chapter’s scholarship prize to $100K, consistent with what Zeta Tau Alpha also got for their first prize winnings.
Thanks again to everyone who helped make The Sprite Step Off happen. And to one last stroll in the name of unity…
I enjoyed all of the competition, however competers groups 2 and 3 were the best. Group number three sort of reminded me of the Matrix and it was great especially for white girls. Nothing personal and i am glad to see that they are beginning to have rythem. They were so uniformed and well in step with the routine and very creative. I watched the routine more than once that is how good it was to me. I hope that they continue to keep up the good work and continue in future competitions.
After winning the UCLA Step Show back to back 1989 and 1990 (which was the biggest step show in the west coast before any of the big corporate sponsors supported), I must say that Zeta Tau Alpha hooked it up like us old school AKA’s West Coast SIGMA Chapter. It’s not about looking pretty; it’s all about original steps, synchronization, and non-stop energy, which those girls displayed. They flowed from one step to another like champs. That’s how it was done -the Old School Way!
My younger sista’s got an A+++ on the creativity with the raised leg step, but they did now show the same level of energy, synchronization and diligence flowing from one step to another. Too much focus on flipping the hair, which is not what stepping is all about. It was obvious that my sista’s had what it took to win, but they lost focus with the prestige of being an AKA and having won in the past – that the hungry unknown Zeta Tau’s was able to take the win with their hunger to win and level of perfection and diligence that marked Old School AKA stepping.
All I can say to my sista’s is: DON”T LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN! But congrats to Zeta Tau!
Old School AKA!
sorry all my sistahs… But those white girls… SMOKE all of you…. you didnt even have a chance… and you coming out to the Rhythm Nation… are you serious… this is 2010… come up with some new ideas
This is an outrage!!!!! It’s obvious that my Sorors came to win and they were robbed. Their show’s level of difficulty alone was enough to take 1st place.
Sorry Dawg! ZTA won hands down. If you want to talk dancing like white girls then you have to give it to the AKAs. If they were not so focused on swinging their weave oops hair then maybe their performance could have been a little bit more innovative.
Dayum!!! The soros look damn good!!! That’s the real winners right there…their show was tight! And it doesn’t hurt to look good doing it too!
Those AKA girls are fine as wine.
